Volunteers for Wildlife does not provide care for the types of animals listed below, as they are not native species of Long Island. However, we can assist you in finding help (often locally) if you have found these animals injured, displaced, or in distress.
Pigeons - Visit Pigeon-Talk for assistance with sick, injured, or orphaned pigeons, and try the International Federation if you've found a banded pigeon.
Starlings & Sparrows - Starling Rescue and Care provides information on caring for starlings and sparrows.
Feral Cats - Visit the Long Island Cat Project's website for information on trapping, low cost spay/neuter, and adoption of feral cats. Not on Long Island? Try Alley Cat Allies.
Stray Dogs - Contact your local SPCA or Humane Society. Nassau County Animal Services: (516) 781-2052, Suffolk County Animal Services: 631-549-7722. Here is an article on what to do if you have found a stray dog.
Escaped Pet Birds - The Long Island Parrot Society can provide information on lost and found pet birds, you can also try Parrot Rescue for birds lost or found in Suffolk County, NY. The New York Bird Club maintains a forum which includes boards for posting lost and found birds in the tri-state area. Outside of Long Island, you may be able to find a local pet bird rescue organization on this list.
Escaped Pet Rabbits - The Long Island Rabbit Rescue group may be able to provide assistance in finding a home for an escaped pet rabbit. Beyond Long Island, you can find a local rabbit rescue group through The House Rabbit Society.
Escaped Pet Reptiles - Contact the Long Island Herpetological Society or try kingsnake.com. Off of Long Island, you may find a reptile rescue group or individual through this page - Reptile Societies and Rescues.
Farm-type Animals - Chickens, domestic ducks, pheasants, and similar game birds may be taken in by a local small farm, horse barn, or similar establishment. On Long Island, you can try contacting Double D Bar Ranch in Manorville.
