Wildlife Rehabilitation Assistants
 Reports to: Wildlife Center Supervisor

Classification: Part-time (20-30 hours per week)

Position Start:  September 1, 2019
 
Established in 1982, Volunteers for Wildlife, Inc . is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Long Island’s wildlife and habitats through wildlife rehabilitation and conservation education. Volunteers for Wildlife operates the only fully-staffed wildlife hospital in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. The hospital admits approximately 2,000 injured, orphaned and sick native animals each year for rehabilitation. In addition, VFW provides permanent sanctuary to twenty seven non-releasable ambassador animals. Together with our educators, these animals help us to present over 200 educational programs annually.
 
Volunteers for Wildlife's Wildlife Rehabilitation Assistant will gain practical, hands-on experience in a busy wildlife rehabilitation clinic. Working side by side with the Center Supervisors and Senior Wildlife Rehabilitators, the Assistant will provide:

-Wildlife Husbandry: diet preparation, enclosure cleaning, handling, weighing, environmental enrichment, daily record keeping and observations 

-Feeding, fluid therapy and medication administration 

-Admission, examination procedures and triage 

-Monitoring and evaluating patients throughout the rehabilitation process 

 -Supervisory skills with wildlife rehabilitation interns and volunteers
 
Qualifications:

-Associates or Bachelors Degree in Biology, Animal or Wildlife Science, Veterinary Technology or similar field. 

-Six Months of professional experience in the animal care field at a wildlife center, veterinary hospital, animal shelter or similar preferred

-Positive attitude and commitment to promoting a positive work environment. 

-Excellent Communication Skills 

-Ability to work efficiently and effectively in emotionally and physically challenging situations 

-Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team 

-Strong skills in delegating tasks and managing people 

-Ability to perform physical work including working outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
