The Effects of Oil Dumping on Wildlife

Friday afternoon our team rescued a pair of Canada Geese from this reservoir in Commack! Thanks to an observant nearby homeowner, we were alerted of their distress late Friday morning. We were able to dispatch our staff quickly to catch them. These birds were contaminated with cooking oil, likely from illegal dumping. The natural waterproofing of waterfowl keeps them dry even when in water, so their wet appearance was a clear indicator that these geese needed help. When a contaminant is on the feathers, birds have difficulty maintaining their temperature, flying and staying buoyant in the water.

Our staff and volunteers will be working hard over the next few days to remove the oil. Please be sure to dispose of your oil responsibly (and legally)!
